Things to do in Calabasas: an easy guide to a day close to home
You don't need a packed schedule to enjoy Calabasas. A little local history, a walk outdoors and a good lunch can turn a free afternoon into a day worth remembering. The trick is choosing a few stops that fit your mood instead of trying to see everything.
If you're looking for things to do in Calabasas, start with three places: Leonis Adobe Museum for history, The Commons at Calabasas for shopping and dining, and nearby Malibu Creek State Park for time outdoors. Pick one as your main stop, then build the rest of the day around it.
Step into local history at Leonis Adobe Museum
Leonis Adobe Museum on Calabasas Road offers a different view of the area from the shopping centers and traffic along the freeway. The historic home and ranch grounds introduce visitors to life on a California rancho and the story of Miguel Leonis and Espiritu Chijulla.
The adobe is one of the oldest surviving residences in the San Fernando Valley. Rather than rushing through, give yourself time to notice the building, explore the grounds and learn about the people who lived here. It's a useful stop for families, visitors and longtime residents who want to understand more about their own neighborhood.
There is one detail to plan around: you can only go inside the historic house on a guided tour. Check the museum's current visiting information before you leave, and time your arrival around a tour if the interior is on your list. The museum also says photography and video are not allowed during the house tour.
Don't add neighboring Calabasas Creek Park to your itinerary without checking first. At the time of writing, the museum lists the park as closed for maintenance, with no reopening date announced.
Make time for The Commons at Calabasas
For a less structured outing, head to The Commons at Calabasas on Commons Way. Its open-air layout, Mediterranean-style buildings, landscaping and fountains make it a natural place to combine a meal with a little browsing.
You don't have to make shopping the whole point. Meet a friend for coffee, browse at Barnes & Noble or choose a restaurant and leave yourself time to walk around afterward. That works especially well when you want a Calabasas afternoon without hiking gear or a long drive into the mountains.
The center's current directory includes choices such as HiHo Cheeseburger, King's Fish House, Porta Via and SUGARFISH. Use the directory to pick a place that suits your group, then check the restaurant's own hours and reservation options. Individual businesses may keep different hours from the center.
For a simple family plan, choose the meal first and treat everything else as optional. For a catch-up with friends, one restaurant and a short stroll may be all the itinerary you need.
Get outdoors at nearby Malibu Creek State Park

If your idea of a good day involves more trail time than shopping, nearby Malibu Creek State Park is another option. Its main entrance is on Las Virgenes Road, south of Highway 101, making it a separate outdoor outing rather than a walking-distance addition to the other stops.
The park has hiking, picnic areas and landscapes shaped by the Santa Monica Mountains. It also has film and television history, including locations used for M*A*S*H. You can build a visit around a picnic and a shorter walk rather than assuming every trip has to reach a famous filming site.
Choose your route before you arrive. Check California State Parks for current alerts, look at the trail information and carry water and sun protection. Trail conditions and seasonal crossings can change, so an older route description shouldn't be your only guide.
Coming with a dog? Pets are not allowed on the park's dirt roads or hiking trails. They are permitted in designated areas including the campground, day-use picnic areas, parking lots and paved park roads. Trained service animals are treated differently; check the park's guidance if that applies to your visit.
Put together a day that fits you
For history and lunch, start with a museum visit timed around a house tour, then head to The Commons for a meal. For an outdoor morning, make Malibu Creek State Park the main destination and decide afterward whether you want another stop.
Keep a little breathing room between activities. Confirm opening hours, any fees and current access information directly with each destination before heading out. None of these plans needs a special event to be worthwhile.
